Harolds younger years were spent as a farm laborer. He also worked in a stockroom for a screw comapny in Lowell, Ma. As a young man he had an unfortunate accident of falling under the wheels of a train in a yard switching operation. His right leg was grieviously damaged requiring several surgeries and more than a year of hospitalization. For the rest of his life Harold walked with a severe limp, and later in life he used two canes. Because of being crippled he didn't feel it was right to ask a girl to marry him, so he remained single all of his life. His Brothers and Sisters all contributed to get Harold into the Odd Fellows Home in Worcester where he remained until he passed.
