Lewis James, s. of unknown parents, b. at Pennsylvania. Per the June 1850 census (enumerated Nov. 1850) he was then 52 years old (b. circa 1798). In the June 1860 census (enumerated Aug. 1860) he was then 63 years old (b. circa 1797). He d. at La Harpe, IL on Aug. 2 per his gravestone in the year "1886, aged 69 years," which is an obvious error for the year of his death.

Nothing is currently known about him other than the above and the following few details. He m. of record Jan. 25, 1844 at Hancock County, IL (IL Marr. Rec.), Sophia F. Robinson, dau. of Capt. Ephraim Robinson and Mary Upham, b. per her gravestone July 5, 1808 at Pawlet, VT. She d. Dec. 26, 1888 at La Harpe while undoubtedly Lewis James' widow residing in the household of their married dau. America (James) Peck. For more details, see wife Sophia's memorial.
