Sophia, along with several of her younger siblings, most notably youngest brother George Washington Robinson, were early converts from Congregationalism to the Mormon Church, but left that church before 1850. Records indicate she was residing at Nauvoo, Hancock County, IL in 1843 where she, as "Sophia Robinson," witnessed a transaction in the records of Frederick G. Williams, Nauvoo's Justice of the Peace.
On Jan. 25, 1844 at Hancock County, IL (IL Marr. Rec.), Sophia m. Lewis James, who by census data was some ten years older than her, b circa 1798 at Pennsylvania. In the 1850 and 1860 censuses they were residing at Hancock County's La Harpe Twp., the county's northeastern-most township more than 18 miles east of Nauvoo. Lewis James d. Aug. 2, 1868, aged 69 (g.s.). His gravestone is cut to claim he died Aug. 2, 1886, an obvious error. In both the June 1870 and June 1880 censuses of La Harpe, Sophia as the widow James was residing at the household of her son-in-law, Virgil Peck.
Sophia and her husband had only two known child, the eldest known only by her inscription on her parent's common monument:
• i. Mary E. James, b. Apr. 3, 1846, d. in infancy Aug. 3, 1847.
• ii. America James, b. Apr. 5, 1849 at La Harpe, IL, d. Jan. 6, 1931 at Downing, MO; m. Sept. 16, 1866 at La Harpe, IL, Virgil Stewart Peck, s. of George W. Peck and Lucinda Rowley, b. Jan. 4, 1844 (g.s.) at Gallia County, OH. He d. Sept. 30, 1911 at Downing, MO. Five children of the family.
