According to the 1925 Robinson Genealogy, restating the descendant generations from the family's immigrant New England ancestor, Isaac Robinson:

"SAMUEL6 ROBINSON (Ephraim5, Samuel4, Peter3, Peter2, Isaac1). Born in Pawlet, VT February 13, 1803 and died in Grove, Alleghany Co., NY. He married 1st in Pawlet, VT an unnamed wife; married 2nd in Grove, Allegany Co., NY another unnamed wife, by whom he had no children."

On Sept. 16, 1825 in Pawlet, VT Samuel m. Mary Baldwin, both stated as being of Pawlet (VT Vital recs.), whose parents have not been identified. A Joel and Samuel Baldwin were both residents of Pawlet in 1820 and 1830 and both had daughters enumerated in 1820 of comparable age to Samuel to have been his father-in-law in 1825. Samuel does not appear in the Pawlet town records between 1825 and 1840 to have held any town office and it is probable that he had removed from Pawlet. However, he can not be found enumerated as a householder in the 1830 and 1840 censuses in Vermont or New York. The 1925 Robinson Genealogy further claimed he had a daughter "Malissa" and an unnamed son born in Pawlet, but gave no dates of birth. No child born to Samuel Robinson appears in the Pawlet town or Vermont Vital records and there is no record of a child of Samuel buried in the Old Pawlet cemetery where his parents and stepmother are interred.

In the June 1850 census a Samuel Robinson, of appropriate age born in Vermont, was residing unmarried in the household of Aaron and Lois (Remington) Smith in the town of Granger in northwest Allegany County, NY. Granger is due west of Grove. Until proved otherwise, this Samuel Robinson is assumed to be Capt. Ephraim and Mary (Upham) Robinson's son Samuel.

By the 1855 New York state census Samuel had married the widow Mary (Dewey) Bates and living in Portage, Livingston, NY. Mary previously married Orville C. Bates on 11 Jan. 11, 1827 in Ira, Rutland County, Vermont and appears as the widow Bates with four children in the 1850 census of Portage, the north adjoining town to Granger in Allegany County. Samuel and Mary appear as husband and wife in the 1860 census of Portage. However, except for Mary's son Charles W. Bates neither they or the other Bates children can be found in the 1865 state census of Allegany or adjoining Livingston county.

Mary appears as the widow Robinson in the 1870 census of Danville, Livingston County accompanied by her widowed daughter Mary Bates and four grandchildren. According to the New York Death Index, Mary (Dewey) (Bates) Robinson died in Danville on Feb. 29, 1884. It would appear Samuel Robinson died between the June 1860 and June 1870 federal census.
