James F. Phillips, 75, a longtime resident of Quincy, died Thursday, May 18, 1995, in Keller Ferry following a sudden illness.
He was born July 12, 1919, to Frank and Mary (Pauley) Phillips at Red Lodge, Mont. He attended school in Montana and grew up farming and ranching in Montana and Idaho.
He joined the U.S. Army in April 1941 and served with Battery B 731st Field Artillery Battalion. He received the Bronze Star and was a member of George Patton's command. He was honorably discharged in July 1945 as a staff sergeant.
He moved to Soap Lake in 1950 and worked on construction for Burd and Bush, helping to build the main irrigation canal for the Bureau of Reclamation. He moved to Quincy in the early 1950s.
He married Ruth (Matthews) Kiehn on July 16, 1966, at Coeur d'Alene, Idaho.
Mr. Phillips and Hank Aitken built the Sage and Seed Co. and worked there. Mr. Phillips worked for Albert Dickerson and W.R. Grace and retired from Quincy Farm Chemicals in 1983.
He was a member of Ephrata Lodge No. 1816, the Quincy Lambert Shultz American Legion Post No. 183, and was a charter member of the Quincy Moose Lodge No. 1925.
Survivors include his wife, at home; two daughters, Paulette Miller of Phoenix, Ariz., and Judy Hubler of Anchorage, Alaska; a stepson, Charles Kiehn of George; two stepdaughters, Ruth Simmons of San Jose, Calif., and Patricia Kniep of George; two brothers, David Foust of Bouse, Ariz., and Carl J. Foust of Boise, Idaho; two sisters, Madge Schlegle of Boise, Idaho, and Esther Gray of Lakeview, Ore.; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
