Samuel was the son of Samuel Buttle and Elizabeth (nee Rowsom) Buttle. Samuel was born June 4, 1811 in County Wexford, Ireland. Samuel Buttle Jr. married Mary Warren in Camolin, Ireland in 1830. Samuel and his family immigrated to the United States on the ship Atlas which arrived in New York on November 8, 1848. Samuel and Mary Buttle's children include: Eliza, Samuel Warren, Richard Warren, William Warren, Mary Ann, Susan S., Harry Thomas, and Charles John Buttle. Samuel Buttle owned a factory specializing in straw goods. According to an auction house selling portraits of Samuel Buttle and Mary Warren Buttle painted by John George Brown in 1859, Samuel's straw hats were "largely sold to Southern plantation owners." Samuel Buttle Jr. is found in Brooklyn City Directories with listed occupation as straw goods and hats. Samuel Buttle Jr. died May 29, 1888, while staying with this eldest daughter Eliza (nee Buttle) Bolger who ran a boarding house in Brooklyn, Kings, New York.
