Major, 1st New York Volunteer EngineersRichard Warren Buttle was the son of Samuel Buttle Jr. and Mary (nee Warren) Buttle. Richard Warren Buttle was born March 2, 1838 in Courtown Shop, Killena Parish (now Ardamine Parish), Dublin. He immigrated to the United States aboard the ship Atlas which arrived in New York on November 8, 1848. He attended Oberlin College from 1855-1857. He served in the 12th Reg't New York State Militia and later with the 133rd Reg't New York Infantry during the Civil War for which he was brevetted Major for gallantry in action. Richard later entered the wholesale woolen trade in Brooklyn. He was a member of the Loyal Legion, the Society of the Army and Navy of the Gulf, and U.S. Grant post, G.A.R. Richard also enjoyed participating in amateur dramatics and was a member of the Amaranth Dramatic Society. ***** Richard married Helen Pamelia Barrett on January 10, 1864. Following her death in 1868, Richard Warren Buttle latter met and married Adelaide Madge Hoffy. Richard and Adelaide were married November 8, 1871 in Christ Church in Brooklyn, New York. Richard died August 5, 1898 in Brooklyn, New York following a week's illness with Bright's disease.
