John was born and raised in Indianapolis. His parents were Jacob and Christina Hahn, German immigrants. He moved to Seattle, as a young man and remained there until his death caused by a heart attack on a Greyhound bus.
He was a molder for the Washington Iron Works.
He married twice. His first wife, Rhoda "Belle" (Halliday) Gardner Hahn, died in 1931. His widow was Mary Grace (Flint) Lalonde Hahn.
