Manufacturer Dies, Was Native of the City
Sherman D. Clegg, 80, native of Lafayette and well known for his philanthropy to educational and religious projects, died at his home in Dayton, O., Monday at 10 a.m. Born April 2, 1868, and reared in this community, Mr. Clegg entered the field of drug advertising and merchandising as an employee of Sterling Products in Attica, and married Elizabeth Alice Timmons of Ash Gove. He was an advertising consultant, published a textbook on the subject, and founded the Vinco Herb company at wheeling, W. Va. Later he moved the company to Dayton, O., continuing operations of his own company exclusively until he retired. Much of his interest was centered on scholarships as his interest grew in promoting education. He was a donor and benefactor to project at Ohio Wesleyan university, Blackburn and Antioch colleges, and was intimately associated with the growth in the physical plant of Grace Methodist church of Dayton, O.
He is survived by his widow; two brothers in this city, Edwin and Richard; two sisters, Mrs Orpha B. Wasson, Norfolk, Va., and Mrs. Sue VanMeter, Monticello; as well as a half-sister, Anna Lee, Lafayette.
