Edwin R. Clegg, 82, co-founder and former secretary-treasurer of the Peerless Wire Goods company and a former long-time member of the Tippecanoe County council, died in his home 926 South Tenth street, at 6 p.m. Monday. He had been in failing health for several years and in serious condition for several weeks.
Born in West Lafayette, he spent his life in this community and was long identified with the public life of Lafayette and Tippecanoe County. He was a Republican member of the county council for 26 years from Jan 1, 1931, to Dec. 31, 1957, and was a member of the board of trustees of the Lafayette Savings bank for 21 years. He was elected a bank trustee Feb. 6, 1940, and served continuously until his death.
Mr. Clegg and the late Ernest Schilling founded the Peerless Wire Goods company in 1910 and Mr. Clegg was secretary-treasurer of the concern for 33 years until his retirement from the business in 1943.
His hobby in recent years was as a supporter of spectator sports. He himself engaged in figure ice skating until he was 65 years old. He played on the old Lafayette baseball team as a young man and also on a Kiwanis club team. He was a benefactor and supporter of community organizations. Mr. Clegg was married to Mathilda E. Meyer in 1906 and was a member of the Home Builders class of Trinity Methodist church school.
Surviving with the widow are a son, Harold H. Clegg of Lafayette, and a daughter, Mrs. George W. Herrold of Lafayette R. 5. The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday.
