Edward enlisted with the 100-day men for the defense of Washington during the Civil War but instead was sent in the hot summer to Memphis where he died of typhoid fever on July 31, 1864. While he is buried in the Memphis Civil War Cemetery, there is also a tablet in Coldspring Cemetery.
