Joseph was born in Franklin County Virginia of unknown [to me] parents. John England and Vesta Zipporah Choate may have been his parents...but I can find no authentication.

Joseph married Phoebe Jones, the daughter of Robert Augustus Core Jones [1748] Eng/VA and Susannah Richards [1769] VA; in the year 1815 in Roane County Tennessee. Phoebe's first husband, James Stewart [1785], had passed away during military service [War of 1812] December 31 1814.

Several related-by-marriage families [Richards, Stewart, Warren, England, Jones, Maddox] had emigrated into Tennessee in 1814 [some sooner].

Joseph's and Pheobe's children:
1. Thomas [1821] TN
2. Sarah [?] IL? +William Wilkins

From: "Portrait and Biographical Record of Macoupin County, Illinois", published 1891, has a biography for Samuel England (1820-1903) ... son of John Thomas England. The first paragraph reads:
"Samuel England, one of the prosperous citizens of Girard, was born in Morgan County, Tenn., February 22, 1820. He comes of substantial parentage. His grandfather, Joseph England, moved from Virginia to Tennessee and was a pioneer in Morgan County, where he bought a tract of land and engaged in farming. He sojourned there until 1830, when he came to Illinois, and resided in Macoupin County for a time. Removing thence to Marion County, he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Sarah England-Wilkins, until the day of his death."
[The above article was sent to me from England descendant and researcher, Patrick England.]

NOTE: In census of 1840 a man of age 70-79 is listed as living in household of William and Sarah Wilkins in Marion County IL. This would appear to be Joseph.

Also, thanks to Mary Ann Kaylor's online Stewart family history from which much of this material came.
