Elizabeth Barnwell Smith, daughter of James Smith and Mariana Gough, was born January 12, 1815. She married April 7, 1838, Nathanial Barnwell Heyward, born June 12, 1816. She died November 7, 1887. Her husband Nathaniel died December 11, 1891 and was buried with his wife in St. Helena's Churchyard. They had eleven children:
1. Nathaniel Heyward, born July 2, 1839; died October 6, 1840.
2. Nathalie Heyward, born August 22, 1841, married May 2, 1866 Warren Adams, son of Governor James H. Adams and Jane Moore. He was born November 28, 1838 and served as a colonel of infantry during the war. For a while he was commander of Fort Wagner in Charleston Harbor. Colonel Adams died November 4, 1881 and Natha-he on June 13, 1913. They had nine children.
3. James Smith Heyward, born June 3, 1843, was a first lieutenant of ordnance on Fort Sumter in the war. After the war he was professor of natural science at the State Agricultural Society and Catlin College in Orange-burg. Ile married February 10, 1874 Caroline Anne Salley, had eleven children and died January 3. 1901.
4. Mary Anne Heyward, born October 16, 1844, married December 14, 1865 Dr. Benjamin Walter Taylor of Columbia, son of Benjamin Franklin Taylor and Sally Webb Coles. Born February 28, 1834, he died December 27, 1905. She died December 5, 1907, having had eight children. Their daughter, Anna Heyward Taylor, was a well known artist in Charleston.
5. Albert Rhea Heyward, born January 10, 1846, served as a sergeant in the Citadel Cadets in the war. He mar-ried February 16, 187 I Sallie Coles Green, daughter of Halcott Pride Green and Virginia Eliza Taylor. She was born January 21, 1849 and died December 20, 1920. He died November 24, 1910. They had nine children.
6. Julius Henry Heyward, born July 3, 1848, also served with the Citadel Cadets in the war and after the war moved to Greenville where he was admitted to the bar in 1878. He became (1879) the United States Commissioner and Standing Master of the Circuit Court. He married first, March 10, 1881, Elizabeth Smith Middleton, daughter of William Middleton and Susan Pringle Smith. After her death, he married Anne Louise Heyward (1865-1943) daughter of Daniel Blake Heyward and Louisa Patience Blake. He died June 23, 1923.
7. Edmund Rhett Heyward, born November 10, 1849; died January 16, 1851.
8. Esther Barnwell Heyward, born February 13, 1851, married January 5, 1891 James Marsh Seignous, son of Francis P. Seignous and Esther Wightman. He was born November 4, 1843 and died January 25, 1913. Esther died August 31, 1922. They had no children.
9. Barnwell Rhett Heyward, born August 5, 1853, graduated (A. B. and LL. B.) and practiced law in Albany, New York. Ile compiled the early histories of the Barnwell and Heyward families and died, unmarried, January 27, 1921. 10. Emily Barnwell Heyward, born August 7, 1855, married December 11, 1878 Alexander Garden Clarkson, son of William Clarkson and Amelia Garden Pringle. He was born February 14, 1854 and died May 20, 1920. Emily died November 22, 1928. They had nine children.
11. Roger Moore Heyward, born January 18, 1857; died May 28, 1857.
