Gottlieb was born 15 Dec 1868 on a farm outside of Guttenberg, IA. He received his education in that community.
He married Mary (Theresa) Imholt at Haverhill, IA, 26 Jan 1892.
Gottlieb and Mary made their home in Haverhill for six years following their marriage and then moved to Williams, IA where he was engaged in the carpenter trade for two years. The remaining fifteen years of their lives were spent in Williams with the exception of three years when they lived on the Vorwald farm near Colesburg.
