At the age of 22, or in the year 1848, he and his brother came to this country, the United States, intending to go to California for gold. The same year, his sister moved to Alsace Lorraine, which was at that time German Territory, where his mother died. His dad lived at Sunheim, France.
Arriving in this country, they came overland from New York to Cleveland, OH, where August Staebler took up a homestead and engaged in farming while his brother continued on to California. He was married to Caroline Shrunk in the year 1849. They farmed at Colesburg, Iowa and retired in New Vienna. Ten children were born to this union.∼August Steabler was a Civil War
