Ed Niehus
Ed Niehus, 84, of Remsen,died Friday, July 26, 2002, at St. Luke's Regional Medical Center at Sioux City following a brief illness.

Ed Niehus was born April 21, 1918, at rural Remsen, the son of Bernard and Katherine (Dietermann)Niehus. He was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at St. Mary's
Catholic School in Remsen from which he graduated in 1936. He was then engaged in farming with his parents.

In 1941 he attended and graduated from Coyne Electrical School at Chicago, 111., after which he returned to Remsen and resumed farming with his parents. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from June 11, 1942, until his discharge Jan. 14, 1946. He then again returned to Remsen and resumed farming.

On Feb. 22, 1949, he married Beatrice Hagen at Sioux City. They made their home near Remsen where they were engaged in farming. Beatrice died Nov. 16, 1976. Ed retired and moved into Remsen in 1984. He had been a resident of the Happy Siesta Health Care Center since April 29, 2002.

He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Luxembourg Brotherhood, all at Remsen, and had served on the Plymouth County Board of Review for several years.

Survivors include three sons, Dennis of Remsen, Larry and his wife, Jana, of Sioux City, and Paul of Chipita Park, Colo.; three grandchildren, Nathan and his wife, Candy Niehus of Salem, Ore., Nicole Niehus of Chicago, 111., and Aaron Niehus of Lincoln, Neb.; one brother, Walter and his wife, Rita of Le Mars; three sisters-in-law, Wilma Jochum of Colorado Springs, Colo., Patty Niehus of San Bernardino, Calif., and Marcella Niehus of Remsen.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one daughter, Rosemary Marie in infancy, and four brothers, Cletus, Raymond, Gilbert and LeRoy.

Funeral services were at 10 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Tim Johnson officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen.

Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and Knights of Columbus rosary at 8 p.m., all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.

Casketbearers were Donald and Gerald Keffler, James, Kenneth and Robert Niehus and Gerald Staab. Knights of Columbus honorary bearers were Ervin Ahlers, Thomas Bohnenkamp, Alvin Groepper, Paul Lang, Ronald Niehus and Charles Tentinger.

Luxembourg honorary bearers were Oscar Block, Herman Kluver, Melvin Koch, Walter Nilles, LeRoy Schroeder and Vernon Staab.
