JAMES PORTER ANDERSON, SR., known to friends and relatives as Porter Anderson, was born April 5, 1892, at Kemp, Indian Territory, (now Oklahoma). Kemp, Oklahoma, was a small community in Indian Territory near the Texas border where his parents, Andrew Jackson Anderson and Ellen Elizabeth Ball, had settled as a farming family.

Porter's father became ill and the family traveled back to his native Tennessee to obtain medical treatment. Andrew's father, Overton B. Anderson, was a practicing doctor. Andrew failed to recover and died January 12, 1895. Porter was almost three years old at the time of this trip to Tennessee. This trip was the earliest event in Porter's life that he could recall. Porter's mother returned with three children, Porter, his brother, and a sister, to Texas where she remarried twice--first to John H. Young in 1901 and secondly to John Harrison Garrett in 1906.

Porter struck out on his own when he was 13 years old. He worked as a farmhand during his teenage life. It was at a church singing service that he met Nora Sylvestia Adkins. After a courtship, he and Nora were married December 22, 1912, in Weaverton, Oklahoma.

Porter and Nora lived most of their early married life in Marshall and Carter Counties in Oklahoma. They were living at Kingston, Marshall County, when their daughter, Ada Marie, was born in August of 1914. From Kingston, they went to Wirt, Carter County, Oklahoma, where son, Arnold Jackson, was born in October of 1916. In early 1917, they moved to Wilson in Carter County. About 1922, the family moved near Ardmore, Carter County, for about a year, after which time, they returned to Wilson. In 1926, they moved to Sulphur, Oklahoma, living there until about January of 1927, moved to Statford until school was out and then returned to Wilson in the summer time, where son, James Porter, Jr., was born.

Porter owned and operated grocery stores, and worked for the Carter Oil Company during the early 1920's. He later owned and operated a wholesale grocery distribution business centered in Wilson, Oklahoma, where he and Nora lived until 1935. The family moved to Okemah, Oklahoma, later to Oklahoma City, and finally settled in Shawnee, Oklahoma, in 1937. Porter worked for Douglas Aircraft Company in Oklahoma City during the war years. Later, he owned and operated a concrete block manufacturing company and then retired from Tinker Air Force Base in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, in 1957.

Porter was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Shawnee, Oklahoma, and member (32nd degree) of the Scottish Rite Bodies in McAlester, Oklahoma. After his retirement in 1957, he built a cabin at Texoma Lake. He and Nora enjoyed their times at their lake cabin until 1973, when Nora wasn't able to travel to the lake.

Porter and his wife, Nora, were lifelong members of the Methodist Church. Porter suffered a stroke in December 1981. He died May 9, 1983 in a Shawnee, Oklahoma rest home, at the age of 91. He is buried east of Shawnee, in the Resthaven Cemetery, Garden of Peace, Lot 21, Section B, Space two.
