Willy was either the first or second of seven children born to James William Barkley (b.1853), son of Charles Allison and Harriet Ross Barkley and grandson of William and Mary Allison Barkley, and Virginia "Jennie" Caroline Hupp who married in 1873. On the 1900 census, Jeannie and James report 5 of 7 children still living. From the 1880 and 1900 census, the names of 5 of their children appear--Ema A. (b.1877), Floyd Mahlon (b.1880), Frank (b.1883), Dean (b.1888) and Bismark (b.1891). The family lived in Lakeville, Indiana. Willy was buried near his great-grandfather William, who also died in 1875, his great-grandmother Mary, who died in 1885, and two of his great aunts--Nancy Barkley and Mary Ann Martin.
