Iva 'Skeets' L. Tomlinson, 91, of Duluth died Friday April 30, 2004 in Duluth. Iva was born Sept. 22, 1912 in Cass Co., Minn. Her mother died when Skeets was 6 weeks old and the grandparents on the family farm raised her and her sister. Skeets attended grades 1-8 at Wadena Co. School #55 North, a one-room wood heated school a mile walk from the farm. She worked for her room and board in Wadena while completing grades 9-12, graduating in 1930. Skeets married Kenneth D. Tomlinson on Sept. 22, 1933; they met when she worked at an upscale resort near Detroit Lakes, Minn. Mr. Tomlinson started a lumber company in Nimrod, Minn., where they began their family of one daughter and two boys. WWII saw a large business expansion for the Tomlinson family. They moved to Two Harbors, Minn. and then to Duluth in 1947, where she lived the rest of her life. While Kenny was building a nationwide lumber enterprise, Skeets raised her family, played golf, and was an accomplished Bridge player, a dedicated community worker, and a lifetime active member of the Lester Park Methodist church. Her husband Kenneth preceded Skeets in death in 1983 and then her daughter Mari Max Hoffman of Hilton Head, S.C. in 2003. Skeets is survived by her sister Ruth Serfling of Staples, Minn.; sons, Felix and beloved daughter in law, Jean of Hood River Oregon and Kenneth "Tom' and beloved daughter in law, Barbara of Duluth; son in law Benjamin Hoffman of Hilton Head, S.C.; grandchildren, Andrew Tomlinson, Amy Tomlinson, Tricia (Donny) Mandelin, Jill Tomlinson, Jack (Linda) Tomlinson, Blake (Anne Cole) Tomlinson, Paula Hoffman, Ken (Susan) Hoffman and Glen Hoffman; great grandchildren, Stacy and Blaine Hoffman, Davey and Megan Homick Cara Goulson, Jenna Caruth, Adam, Dylan, Alex, and Chloe Tomlinson and Lillie Cole-Tomlinson. VISITATION:1 p.m. with services at 2 p.m. Friday, May 7, at Lester Park United Methodist Church, 54th Ave. E. and Superior St. in Duluth, MN 55804. A reception will follow at Blackwoods Restaurant, 26th Ave. E and London Rd. At Skeet's' request, gifts should go to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Association, P.O. Box 1950, Clarksburg, Md. 20871-1950 in Mari Max Hoffman's name or to the Lester Park Methodist Church elevator fund. She greatly appreciated the support and visits of the people of the church.
