Reverend James Hatch Kasson was the second son born to James and Hannah (Gray) Kasson, his first wife. James (the 3rd) was born in Sherburne, New York on February 16, 1817. James received the middle name of 'Hatch' in honor of his grandmother, Reliance (Hatch) Kasson. In 1843, James graduated from Hamilton College (Clinton, NY). He continued his education and graduated in 1846 from the Auburn Divinity Seminary (Presbyterian seminary) in New York, NY. He met a young woman, Mary Sherwood Robbins (born on July 25, 1818 in Norfolk, CT) whom he would later marry. Mary was born in the same parsonage house where her father (Samuel Robbins) had been born - the parsonage house was the first frame house in Norfolk, CT and it belonged to her grandfather, Rev. Ammi Ruhamah Robbins.

From 1846 to 1851, James found work as a pioneer missionary in Marquette, Wisconsin. At the age of 29, James married Mary S. Robbins on September 3, 1846 in Sherburn, MA. Their daughter, Fanny Kasson, was born in Markesan, WI on June 12, 1847. In the autumn of 1847, James was ordained a Presbyterian minister in Waupun, WI at the Madison District Convocation as a Presbyterian minister must be ordained by the church and not by the members of a congregation. Fanny Kasson died in Markesan on May 3, 1848 before the age of one. James and Mary's first son, Joseph Robbins Kasson, was also born in Markesan on August 7, 1849. Joseph would become a farmer in Iowa and marry Alice Prince (born in 1857) on September 16, 1886.

In 1851, Rev. James Kasson became the Presbyterian minister in Baraboo, WI and their second son, Frank Hatch Kasson, was born in Baraboo on June 14, 1852. Frank would go on and become a Presbyterian minister like his father. In 1855, Rev. Kasson and his family moved to Iowa and he was the minister in Delaware County, Iowa until 1867.

Their third son, LeBaron James Kasson, was born on February 1, 1856 in Almoral, Delaware County, IA. [It was customary in the Robbins family, and henceforth in the Kasson family, that at least one son or daughter in each generation would carry the name "LeBaron" in honor of the family connections with Dr. Francis LeBaron (1668-1704) of Plymouth, MA.] LeBaron would go on to graduate from Iowa College (Ames, IA) in 1879. He continued his education and graduated from Iowa State University in 1880 with a degree in Law. LeBaron married Mary McFarland (born in New York in 1855) on April 20, 1882 in Marshalltown, Iowa.

In 1867, Rev. James Kasson became the Presbyterian minister in Grinnell, Iowa and his sons graduated from school there. His health failing, the Reverend James Hatch Kasson died in Grinnell on November 27, 1872 at the age of 55. He is buried in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell, IA. Mary died on July 22, 1907 in Des Moines, IA at the age of 88. She is also buried in the Hazelwood Cemetery in Grinnell, IA.
