David Oscar Downer was born on September 4, 1874, in Wheeling, West Virginia, to Thomas C Downer and Margaret E Holmes Downer. Eventually the family moved from West Virginia to Otero County, Colorado. He met and married Grace Anna Maucher on August 12, 1906, in Manzanola, Colorado. They had five children: Rachel (1907-1999), Thomas (1909-1911), Dorothy (1914-2007), Leroy (1917-1984) and Warren (1923-1986). The family traveled back and forth between the LaJunta/Rocky Ford area in Colorado to Hutchinson, KS. Upon retirement from his ditch-digging machine work, David and Grace opened a bicycle shop in Hutchinson. When retiring from their business David took up oil painting and became the local "Grandpa" Moses. In 1955 they were moved to Concordia to be near his son, Leroy and family. He died on November 24, 1960, in Concordia, Kansas, at the age of 86.
