When Thomas Everett "Ep" Downer was born on December 2, 1862, in Wheeling, West Virginia, his father, Thomas, was 32 and his mother, Margaret, was 25. He had seven brothers and three sisters. Ep had been shot by accident while hunting for deer with his uncle. The shot destroyed his right arm. He was an orchardist. In December 1910, Ep was hauling ditching machinery from La Junta to Kinsley, KS and his left arm got mangled. He never recovered from the accident and died on January 4, 1911, in La Junta, Colorado, at the age of 48, and was buried there.
