Charles, my second great grandfather is the son of Moses and Ann Bates. He was born about 1828 in New Jersey. He married Hannah Wilson on September 21, 1850, in Camden, New Jersey. He worked as a farm laborer until about 1863 when he became a waterman. Hannah and Charles moved to Philadelphia before 1870. They had seven children; John P Bates, Maria P. Bates, Mary Anna Bates, Sarah Bates, Charles Bates, Ella Reese Bates and Edward Bates.
Hannah died in 1872, and was laid to rest in the Palmer Grounds. Charles was living at 1051 East Dauphin Street in Philadelphia when he died of Paresis on March 6, 1879. He was buried in the Balmer Grounds on March 10, 1879.
