Georgie, as his family called him, graduated from West Tech HS in Cleveland, OH and worked at his father's butcher shop on Lorain Rd. in Cleveland.

When WWII broke out, Georgie, being a butcher, was exempt from service, but he enlisted anyways at Fort Benjamin, IN on 22 Jun 1942. He was trained at Fort Riley, KS and Camp Hill, VA in Calvary Reconnaissance.

He served under the 91 Calvary Recon Squadron, Troop C where he was lovingly known as "Pancho" by his squad-mates for always going into battle with crossed bandoleers and extra hand grenades (much like Mexican Revolutionary, Pancho Villa).

He fought in the Africa, Sicily, and Italy Campaigns. His squad-mates noted that even though he had been wounded twice, he was fearless; The second of which happened on the 10 Jan 1944 in Italy while actively pushing back the Germans and heading north towards Rome.

Georgie served a total of 20 months overseas without furlough and by July 1944, he was 1 of only 3 members left from his original troop.

Georgie was killed in action on the 8 Jul 1944 in the vicinity of Montecatini, Italy shortly after taking over command of night recon patrols from his squad-mate Fred Salter. A few nights into patrols, Georgie was shot behind enemy lines while he and his squad-mate were returning to his unit at the end of their nightly recon.

On the 8 Aug 1944, Georgie was temporarily buried in Follonica, Italy at the local US Military Cemetery (Plot C, Row 36, Grave 423). After the war, Georgie was returned home for a proper family burial at the family burial plot in Columbia Station, OH which took place on 8 Dec 1948.

Georgie was awarded 2 purple hearts and a bronze star for "heroic achievement in combat" on 19 May 1944.
