In the 1920's her mother, Elenora, lived with her and her husband, Abram Henry Knowles in Des Moines, Iowa. Mary was raised in the instruction of the Society of Friends (Quakers).
Mary married Abram "Henry" Knowles,Jr. son of Abram Henry Knowles, Sr. and Adeline "Eliza" Wilber of Livermore, Humboldt County, Iowa. Her husband's parents were farmers.
Mary's husband was a Dentist and also a Quaker, who received instruction in the Society of Friends faith.
