Mary Ann Newton moved with her parents to Adrian, Michigan, then to Elkhart, Indiana and later to Ticonic, Iowa where she would meet and marry John H. Tryon, Sr. on April 15, 1876 at Onawa, Iowa.

They settled on a farm near Blencoe where ten children were born. They grew cane and had a large mill where they sold sorghum for several years.

The Missouri River kept cutting their farm land away so in 1902 John and Mary Ann Tryon bought and moved their family to a 640 acre farm in Burt County, Nebraska, four miles east of Bancroft.
