Sam was the fourth son of John Haines and his wife, Sarah Ann Ross. He married circa 1871 in Adams County, Ohio; to Mary Cathren Varvel (a daughter of John Wesley Varvel & Rosannah A. Bowen). They had five children who lived to adulthood. Sam's physical characteristics were of the typical Hanes; sandy brown hair, blue eyes, slender build. Sam was 5 feet 6 inches tall and weighed around 135 pounds.

OBITUARY NOTICE: Watseka Republican; Watseka, Illinois. Article dated Wednesday, October 22, 1924. Excerpt " Funeral services for H.(meant S.)V. Hanes were held last Wednesday at his late home in Woodland, and internment made in the cemetery there. Mr. Hanes passed away at about 5 p. m. Sunday, October 12, after a year's illness of heart trouble and other infirmities. He was born in West Union, Ohio, and was 71 years old at the time of his death. He followed the occupation of farming and had resided in the Woodland vicinity for the past 31 years, and was highly respected. The widow and following named children survive: Jim Hanes residing at home; C.K. Hanes, of Maywood, and Cary Hanes, of near Watseka. One brother, John Hanes of Watseka, survives, and also several grandchildren, and two great grandchildren are left to mourn."
