Charles was the fourth son born to Samuel V. Hanes and his wife, Mary Cathren Varvel. He married Opha D. Kincade one of eight children born to James M. Kincade and his wife, Mary Myers. Charles and Opha were wed in Hoopeston (Vermilion County), Illinois on September 7, 1902. They had two sons; Marion Donald Leroy (1903-1945) and Ellis Irwin (1906-1969).

OBITUARY NOTICE: Iroquois County Democrat; article dated February 11, 1937. Excerpt " Word was received here the latter part of the week of the sudden death of Chas. Haines of Chicago. Mr. Haines spent his boyhood here. ... (Woodland item)."
