Ella was the fifth child of John Haines and his wife, Sarah Ann Ross. Ella first married on August 29, 1876 in Vermilion County, Illinois; to George Zumwalt. They had one child, named Thomas. She later married William H. Thornburg; one of nine children born to John Thornburg and his wife, Nancy A. Bailey. Ellen and William celbrated their nuptials on November 13, 1880 in Iroquois County, Illinois. This was second marriage for both Ella and William. They had twelve children; three children dying prior to 1910. Nine living children are; Maud, Nettie, Harry A., S. Arthur, Willie, Edna Sara (George) Huse, Lena (L.C.) Ricketts, Jennie (Albert) Rund and Jessie May (James) Hanes.
