NEWSPAPER CLIPPING: "Pioneer, First White Child in Oakland, Dies" [Oakland Tribune, 15 Apr 1918, page 2, col. 6]:
Funeral services were held yesterday for Mrs. Lizzie H.B. Beeby, 63, at the family home, 3850 Clark Street. She was reputed to be the first child born of white parents in Oakland. The aged woman died of diptheria. Mrs. Beeby was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Griffith R. [sic] Henton. She was born September 27, 1854, in a house which stood in wilderness, now Fortieth street and Telegraph avenue. Her father was one of the pioneer merchants of the city, with a place of business at Twelfth street and Broadway. he was a member of the San Francisco vigilantes and commuted daily between Oakland and that city in a rowboat. Mrs. Beeby saw Oakland grow from a habitat for wild animals to the city of today. She knew many of the prominent people in the city's history intimately. She is survived by her husband, Robert J. Beeby; two sons, Robert J., Jr., and Griffith; and two daughters. Mrs. J. E. Squire and Mrs. W.J. Spaulding. She has a sister, Mrs. C.A. Scoville, also living. Interment was in Mountain View cemetery.
