William Joseph Holtgrave was born June 23, 1892, at the Mooney Creek community in northeastern Jefferson County, Kansas. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Holtgrave, he attended the Mooney Creek school. He married Gorgan Fitch of Easton, Oct. 28, 1914, at St. Joseph, Missouri. They farmed in the Denton and Bendena, Kansas communities most of their married life. When he retired from farming in 1970, they moved into Denton. Mrs. Holtgrave died Jan. 18, 1975, and he came to Atchison the following year.
