Nettie Eugenia Lumpkin Ball 90, of Alexandria passed away April 26, 2011 at the Tioga Manor Nursing Home with her family at her side.
A memorial service will be held for Miss Nettie at Hixson Brothers in Alexandria on April 30 at 11:30 AM. Friends may visit from 10:30 AM until the service. Father George Gennuso of St. Michaels Episcopal Church will officiate the service.
Miss Nettie was born on November 14, 1920 to Eugene Hilry Lumpkin, Sr. and Nettie Lee Howard, in Fisher Louisiana. Soon after her birth, the family moved to Minden Louisiana. It was in Minden where her father became the founder of the Sanitary Dairy of Minden. Miss Nettie, her four sisters and two brothers grew up on the dairy farm.
It was on the dairy farm where they all attended to chores before and after school.
Morning chores began at 4:00 AM, seven days a week. This was during the days of the depression and electric milking machines were not available. After milking the cows, the milk was processed and then delivered to local customers. After the milk was delivered, it was time to go to school. When school was out, preparations had to be made for milking the next day.
Upon finishing Minden high school, Miss Nettie attended Louisiana Tech in Ruston, Louisiana where she was a Home Economics major. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and working in the yard. She was an accomplished equestrian. She always entered the Webster Parish Fair cooking contest and placed first in the categories she entered.
During World War Two, Miss Nettie received a position at the Deridder Air Base. She and other non-commissioned employees lived in the barracks on base. Miss Nettie and several of her friends planned an outing to Alexandria to stay at the Bentley Hotel. It was during this time she submitted an application for employment at England Air Force Base. She was accepted and began employment immediately. It was at England Air Force Base where she met Sgt. Robert Leo Ball, Sr. They both said it was love at first sight.
Miss Nettie was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene Hilry Lumpkin, Sr. and Nettie Lee Howard, by her siblings, Rae Ratcliff, Vera Lee Grubbs, Helen Lumpkin, Eugene Hilary Lumpkin, Jr., Dr William Lumpkin, by her husband, Robert Leo Ball, Sr. and one son, Robert Bobby Leo Ball Jr.
She is survived by one daughter, Linda Ball Brocato (Joe), children, Joe Brocato III, (Staci), Christen Brocato Bernard (David), Elizabeth Brocato Meadows (Rick), one son Randy Ball (Rebecca), and children, Jarred Ball (Dina), Jennifer Ball Dell (Adam) and Brittney Ball. Miss Nettie is survived by ten great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, by one sister, Iris Lewis of Myakka City, Florida and by her faithful dog and companion, Punkin.
Following Miss Nettie(tm)s celebration of life, friends and family are invited to attend a farewell gathering at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials to be made to the Humane Society.
Burial will be at the Old Minden Cemetery, Minden, LA on Saturday, April 30 at 4:00 PM.
