An excerpt from the Deseret News: "1st Lt. LaVoy Moore,served with the 4th Infantry Division in Alaska and was cited for saving two enlisted men from drowning in the Yukon River. LaVoy was serving in the US Army Reserve in Salt Lake City at the time of his death."

He was killed during training activities when an explosive missile penetrated his head causing a fatal injury. U.S. Army Reserve center, Moore Hall, 4550 S. 13th East in Salt Lake City was named after him. A large plaque on which a photograph of LaVoy Moore was etched has been placed in the lobby of the reserve center.
