Ira J. Smith, 78, Dies in California

Ira J. Smith, 78, a native of Salem township, died in Los Angeles March 8, according to word received here today.
He was born June 2, 1884, at Salem, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank J. Smith. He attended Salem schools, the Rochester Academy, Rochester, Wis., and Northwestern University, Chicago.
In 1912 he married Harriet Ford at Chicago where he resided for some years. In 1923 he moved to California. He orginated and for six years taught a class in estimateing and construction economics at the University of Southern California. He later became associated with Welton Becker and Associates, architects and engineers, and was vice president of the firm until the time of his death.
He was a member and past master in 1937 of Benjamin Franklin Masonic Lodge 509.
Survivors are one daughter, Mrs. Richard Poole, La Habra, Calif.; one grandson, Lt. Richard Poole; three brothers, Ray A., Silver Lake, Virgil L., Chicago, and Lester M. (Ted), Paddock Lake, and two sisters, Miss Florence Smith, Chicago, and Mrs. Charles (Mae) Waugh, Kenosha. He was preceded in death by his wife and by one sister, Mrs. Alvin (Maude) Marsh.

Ira J. Smith, 78, a native of Salem township, died in Los Angeles March 8, according to word received here today.
