Buddy Charles Champagne Jr., 52, died Feb. 22, 2004, at North Big Horn Hospital in Lovell from complications of multiple sclerosis and diabetes.
He was born Nov. 6, 1951, in Powell. He enlisted in the Navy on July 7, 1972, and served on the USS Bryce Canyon and later on the USS Kitty Hawk as a machinist. He took pride in the work he performed.
After his discharge from the Navy in March 1980, he went back to school, attending Northwest College, where he received an associate of science degree. He then went to the University of Wyoming and majored in education.
Mr. Champagne joined the Wyoming National Guard in September 1980 and retired as a Gunnery Sergeant on Jan. 20, 1994. His last employment was with Fremont Motors in Cody.
In February 2001 he became disabled. After spending three months at the Veterans Hospital in Sheridan, he was transferred to New Horizons Care Center where he resided until his death.
He is survived by his mother Elizabeth (Betty) Todd, step-father Terry Todd of Cody, sisters Sue (Jack) Orr of Winnemucca, Nev., Carma (Fred) Johannesen of Coal Hill, Ark., Jeri (Carl) Shuler of Fromberg, Mont., and Lee Nell Owen of Cody, step-sisters Tammy (David) Ellis and Tara (Scott) Raymond, both of Cody, foster sister Donna (Tom) Hume of Cody, step-brother Troy Todd of Cody, 14 nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his father, grandparents and four maternal uncles.
Funeral services were Feb. 27 at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Stake Center in Cody with interment in the Lovell Cemetery.
