3rd degree burns fatal to Mrs. Clayton Boyer - A forty-year-old city woman, seriously burned Oct. 16 when a can of kerosene tossed into a burning trash barrel exploded, died at 5:10 p.m. Wednesday in General Hospital. Dr. Harold Housman, hospital resident, signed the death certificate on the woman, Mrs. Verna E. Boyer, 512 Church St. The incident occurred in Boyers' rear yard. Mrs Boyer, wife of Clayton S. Boyer, reportedly suffered first, second and third degree burns of the upper portion of her body. The mishap occurred about 3 p.m. Tuesday, Oct 16. Mrs. Boyer told police at that time that she was burning leaves in her trash barrel when she decided to throw a two-gallon can of kerosene into the blaze. It exploded and ignited her dress and hair. Born in Lancaster, she was a resident of the city her entire life and was the daughter of the late Albert E. and Ella Reese Duncan. She was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church. Besides her husband, at home, she is survived by a son, Ronald P., at home; a daughter, Betty Jane, wife of Kenneth D. Hughes, at home; five grandchildren; and two stepchildren, John Boyer and Nancy, wife of Raymond Yarnell, both of Lancaster. Also surviving are these brothers and sisters: William E., Lewis E., Albert E., Raymond F., all of Lancaster; Paul A., Strasburg R1; Mrs. Edna Ream and Ethel, wife of Martin Speece, both of Lancaster R7.
