He was born to father Heinrich Adam Stocke and probable mother Catharina Elisabetha Maeurer in Korbach, Waldeck-Frankenburg, Hesse, Germany. He married Katharina ?Dolte in Germany. He, his wife, and eight of their children came to the United States, arriving in New York, New York on February 26, 1872 on the ship Bremen. One son preceded them to Pittsburgh. Two children died as infants in Germany. One child died in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania four months after their arrival. He was a laborer, then baker. Despondent after his wife's death, he died of "suicide by shooting" 2 months after her death. Burial December 11, 1894.

Note- the year of birth on his grave marker of 1825 is likely an error- I believe he was actually born in 1828. Upon arrival in the US in 1872 he was recorded as 40, on the 1880 census recorded as 52 and age 67 when he died in 1894.
