Denver K. Elliott, 103, of Peoria passed away Tuesday, Jan. 24, at Apostolic Christian Skylines in Peoria.

He was born Dec. 18, 1908, to John D. and Etta J. Kingery Elliott in Jasper County, Ill. He married Eleanor Streitmatter on May 2, 1934. She preceded him in death on Aug. 23, 2009.

Denver is survived by his daughter, Charmaine (Rick) Freeze of Peoria; as well as his siblings, Myrna Alcoke of Effingham, Ill., Elbert Elliott of Hartford, Ill., and Delbert Elliott of Mattoon, Ill.

He was preceded in death by siblings Pat Elliott, Lester Elliott, Lena Sly and Jessie Gephart, as well as one infant son and one infant daughter.

Denver graduated from Effingham High School and began teaching in one-room country schools when he was just 17 years old.

During his years of teaching, he took correspondence courses from Brown's Business College in Peoria and graduated in 1931. He then came to Peoria and taught at Brown's for 18 months, during which time he met Eleanor, the love of his life for 75 years.

Denver worked for Caterpillar Tractor Company for 40 years as superintendent of inventory control and manager of manufacturing systems in data processing until he retired in 1973.

He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church from 1937 until the end of his life and sang in the church choir for more than 70 years. He served as trustee and elder for many years and was chairman of the building committee for the major building expansion in 1972.

Denver was active in button-collecting societies, local, state and national. He served for 30 years as exhibits chairman for the annual exhibition of the National Button Society.

Interment will take place at Springdale Cemetery.
