Lena Sly, 103, died peacefully at 10:45 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005, at her home. She was born Oct. 25, 1901, in Jasper County, IL., to John and Etta (Kingery) Elliott.
Lena was retired from the Retail Clerks Union, spending many years as a seamstress for Illinois Cleaners and Miller's Dress Store. Her favorite job was serving as a waitress at the Wood River Moose Lodge until she was a 101 years old. She was a member of the Women of the Moose for over 50 years and a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the VFW. Lena was affectionately known by many as "Grandma Moose."
Survivors include four children and their spouses, Lavon (Clinton) Cook of Wood River, Eileen (Lee) Klunk of Collinsville, IL., Betty (Lynn) Unterbrink of Springfield, IL., and Harold (Pat) Sly of East Alton, IL; 14 grandchildren and their spouses, Tommy Sly of Lake Ozark, MO., Danny and Donna Sly of Portage, IN., Julie (Mike) Hopkins of Goshen, IN., Jim (Christee) Cook of Collinsville, Carol Cook of Wood River, Susie (Ken) Brigman of Highland, IL., Nancy Stephens of Gretna, LA., Gail (Ron) Deichmann of Hot Springs, MO., Marsha (Brian) Brueggemann of Collinsville, Linda (Jim) Nelson of New Berlin, IL., Cathy (Robert) Babiok of Springfield, IL., and Tammy Long of Godfrey, IL; 33 great-grandchildren; seven great-great-grandchildren; five siblings and their spouses, Jessie Gephart of Effingham, IL., Denver (Eleanor) Elliott of Peoria, IL., Myrna Alcoke of Effingham, Elbert Elliott of Hartford, IL., and Delbert (Helen) Elliott of Mattoon, IL.; and many nieces and nephews.
Lena was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Lester and Omar Elliott; a son and daughter-in-law, Johnie and Eloise Sly; and a great-granddaughter, Hilary Lynn Ross.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Paynic Home for Funerals in Rosewood Heights, with a Women of the Moose collegiate service at 7:30 p.m.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Burial services will immediately follow at Rose Lawn Memory Gardens.
Memorials may be made to the Moose Charities or to BJC Hospice Services.
