Alton Telegraph, 20 Mar 1884:

"A quiet hymeneal event took place at the residence of the bride's parents, Chicago, at 6 pm on the 12th inst. Mr. Paul A. Walters and Miss Mary E. Riggs were united in the holy bonds of matrimony, Rev. Dr. A. E. Kittredge, of the Third Presbyterian church, officiating in the presence of a small company of relatives and friends. After many warm congratulations were extended they partook of a sumptuous spread of viands. The presents were numerous and valuable. Mr. and Mrs. Walters left Chicago, on the 9 pm train, for their future home, Upper Alton. May they experience a life of unalloyed happiness."

Mrs. Mary Walters Dies in St. Louis

Mrs. Mary Emma Walters, 90, a resident of Alton until 18 months ago when she went to St. Louis to make her home with a daughter, Mrs. Nellie Rosenberger, died Tuesday at 1:30 p. m. Her death occurred at the Rosenberger home, 6003 Maple, following an illness of two days of pneumonia.

Mrs. Walters was born in New York, but nearly all her life had been spent in the Alton area. She was before her marriage Miss Mary Emma Riggs.

Mrs. Walters was a graduate of Monticello and was one of the college's oldest alumnae. Se (sic) was married to Paul Walters and the greater part of their married life was spent on a farm in the Seminary road vicinity. She had resided for about 10 years at 1801 Seminary, before going to St. Louis. Mrs. Walters was a member of College Avenue Presbyterian Church.

Surviving in addition to her daughter, Mrs. Rosenberger, are three grandchildren, Mrs. Irene Bickel, Bellaire, Tex., Clarence Rosenberger, St. Louis, and Allen Rosenberger, Wichita Falls, Tex.

The body had been brought to Streeper funeral home for services Thursday at 11 a. m. to be conducted by the Rev. Paul S. Krebs. Burial will be in Godfrey cemetery beside the grave of her husband. Friends may call at the funeral home.

Godfrey Cemetery Index says the inscription is:

MARY E. WALTERS 1858-1949

Mary was in fact born in 1858. However, her gravestone actually says 1855, not 1858.
