Basil Brashear is the son of a veteran of the War of 1812, Pvt. Ithra Brashear(s) and his wife Hannah Elizabeth MIDDLETON Brashear. A unique name, he is named for his great grandfather Basil Brashear (1714-1778). When Basil was in his youth, the Brashear family migrated to Crawford Co, IL where his father served in the Illinois Mounted Rangers, Capt. Joseph Brown's Company.

With the Louisiana Purchase, 1803 new 'frontier territories' in the Mississippi River Valley had opened up for settlement. Basil's father Ithra Brashear migrated west from South Carolina to Christian Co, KY and then onto Crawford Co, IL where Basil and his siblings were raised. On 16 Oct 1826 Basil married Nancy MIDDLETON Brashear (different Middleton family from her mother-in-law) there in Crawford Co, IL. Nancy was also the child of a veteran of the War of 1812, Sgt. Benjamin 'Benoni' Middleton, Sr. and his wife Nancy PATTON Middleton.

In the late-1830's, Basil and Nancy migrated south from Illinois to Hempstead Co, AR with their young family, and her parents and siblings. Not long after this Nancy died and was laid to rest here c.1840/1.

After the death of his 1st wife Nancy, he is married a 2nd time on 27 Jan 1842 to Rosanna MELSON Brashear in Hempstead Co, AR. It is believed she may have died in 1843 as records show that Basil then married Matilda MELSON Brashear on 31 Mar 1844. Matilda gave birth to twins born in 1847, Benjamin and Rosanna. Upon Matilda's death sometime prior to 1850, Basil is married a 4th time to Indiana Martha REYNOLDS Brashear on 06 Jun 1852 there in Hempstead Co, AR.

Basil Brashear is believed to have been laid to rest in Hempstead Co, AR in 1858, when afterwards his 4th wife is then remarried there 09 Jun 1859 to Mathew Ward.
