The couple with their small son, Deward, moved to Okarche, Canadian County, Oklahoma. John took up farming on land east of Okarche. Four children were born to Kate and John on the farm. Two of them, both sons, died in infancy.
They later moved to Piedmont, Canadian County, Oklahoma, where John drove a school bus for twenty-five years. He loved the children and the children were fond of him. Lorene and Betty John were born in Piedmont.
In 1944, John, Kate, and their youngest child, Betty John, moved back to Missouri, and took up residence in Centertown. John was once again around children, this time working as a bus driver and as school custodian.
On 2 February 1957 cancer claimed his life. He was seventy two and a half years old. John was buried in the Centertown Cemetery.
Kate died 7 May 1967, at California, Missouri. She was buried beside John in Centertown.
(My father, John, was the greatest pal that girl could have ever had. I can never remember him telling me "No", but instead would always say, "I'd rather you didn't". I shall always remember a little poem he taught to me, and repeated many times; and I, in turn, have taught it to my children.

one, would think it quite a treat. For willful
waste, makes woeful want, and you may live to
say, 'Oh, how I wish I had the bread that once
I threw away."
