SISTER MARY AQUINAS STIEFERMAN, 79, retired teacher and former alumni director of Kansas Newman College, died Friday. Services will be at 4:30 p.m. Monday in Provincialhouse Chapel. Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Cornelia Wiewel and Mrs. Louise Baustart, both of Okarche, Okla. Lahey's Crest Hill Mortuary has charge.

Genevieve Agnes Stieferman, the sixth child of Peter and Cecilia Stieferman, was born 20 May 1895 at Kliever, Moniteau County, Missouri.

Jenny entered the Sisters Adorers of the Most Precious Blood novitiate in Ruma, Illinois, 13 June 1912. She was invested in the Religious Habit, 6 June 1913, and chose for her name, Sister Mary Aquinas.

Sister made her first or temporary vows of poverty, chastity and obedience 7 July 1914. After taking these vows, Sister went to Wichita, Kansas, where the Community's central house was located. She taught in elementary schools in Kansas and Nebraska.

On 15 August 1920, Sister Mary Aquinas made her Perpetual Vows at St. John's Academy, Wichita, Kansas. Sister then taught at St. John's Academy, which later became Sacred Heart Academy.

In 1933, the Community opened Sacred Heart College, principally to educate their Sisters, and also because there was no Catholic College in Wichita. Sister was the first Biology teacher and also the first Dean of Women at the college when it opened.

She also supervised the landscaping of the college campus, and the new convent grounds in 1960.

Sister Mary Aquinas was Director of the Sacred Heart College Alumni Association for twenty-three years. As a Golden Jubilee gift, the Alumni presented Sister with the funds for a trip to Europe. She chose, instead, to tour the U.S.A. In 1964, her Jubilee year, Sister visited Alumni and points of interest on the East Coast. In 1965, she visited with Alumni and toured the West Coast. Finally, in 1968, Sister completed her "gift" tour by visiting Alumni and historical places of the Old South.

Sister retired in May 1967. She began oil painting and has done several large murals and numerous other paintings, and is still enjoying her hobby

Sister Mary Aquinas Stieferman earned the Bachelor of Science Degree from Fort Hays College, Hays, Kansas, and the Master of Biological Science from the Wichita University, Wichita, Kansas. She was the first person to obtain a Master's with a Major in Botony from this university. Sister's thesis was collecting and identifying the natural flora of Sedgwick County, Kansas.

Sister's philosophy of life has always been: "Face facts squarely, do the best you can, be happy"

In appreciation for her many years as Director of their Association, the Alumni honored Sister Mary Aquinas, upon her retirement, with a tea. On this occasion, they presented her with a watch, and the association's highest award, a silver medal, with the inscription, "Honorary SHC Director for Life". They also announced the establishment of a Sister Mary Aquinas Stieferman Perpetual Scholarship Fund, which, at this time is over the half-way mark to completion, due to the hard work of the Alumni. Both Sister Mary Aquinas' and Sister Mary Petrona's Perpetual Scholarships were set up for the amount of ten thousand dollars, with the interest being used annually by a deserving student.

In 1969, the Community changed both their Habit and title. Sister's official title is now, Sister Mary Aquinas Stieferman Adorer of the Blood of Christ.
