G. Elmer Shafer died Wednesday morning in Luther Manor, Sioux Falls, SD.

Mr. Shafer was born Oct. 30, 1889, in Valley Springs and grew up there. After serving in the Army during World War I, he returned to Valley Springs, where he operated a drey line before starting a Standard Oil Bulk Plant until he retired in 1956.

He married Lizzie Harvey Oct. 11, 1919. She died in 1964. On Oct. 14, 1966, he married Elizabeth Else in Flandreu.

Elmer was a member of the First Lutheran Church, Valley Springs, a life member and past commander of the Charles R. Doman American Legion Post 131, and past president of the Valley Springs School Board. He also served on the Valley Springs City Council.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Faye (Melvin) Grotewold, Lester, Iowa, Mrs. Donna Graves, Grand Terrace, California; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Ila Jean (Orland) Sexe, Sioux Falls; a step-son, Ivan Else, Valley Springs; three grandchildren, several step grandchildren and step great grandchildren; a brother, Harold, Sioux Falls; three sisters, Mrs. Hazel Ronning, Sioux Falls, and Mrs. Josie Coulter, Pine River, Minnesota.

Services began at 1 PM Monday in the First Lutheran Church.
