Laura Elizabeth Binau was born 10 August 1884 on a farm in Jefferson Twp., Wayne Co., IA. She was the oldest daughter of George (Frank) Binau and Ida Gazina Hulsebus.
She attended Higley country school nearby for eight years. She attended and was confirmed in the German Lutheran Church located Clay Twp., at the Junction of what is now Hwy. 65 and Hwy. 3. At about the age of eighteen the German Lutheran church was disbanded, the Binau family became members of New Zion Methodist Church.
On 18 Feb. 1903, she married Peter Dixon Newingham, Pete Newingham came from Kansas to visit his sister Mary Looney, wife of Stephen Abner Looney, who lived in Allerton, Iowa. He was an engineer, and worked for Laura's father, on the steam thrashing machine. After their marriage, they purchased 80 acres of land, part of the old Binau homestead, from George Binau, Laura's father. There they built a house. Their two oldest children were born while they were living on this farm. Homer George Newingham was born 28 March 1904 and Maybelle Virginia Newingham was born 5 August 1906.
Peter and Laura spent a year on a claim in Scott county, Kansas, returned to Wayne County, Iowa for a year and then moved permanently to a farm near Lafountain, Kansas, in 1913. They sold the eighty in Wayne County to George Richard Binau, Laura's brother.
The last three of their five children were all born in Kansas. they were: Charlie Karl Newingham born 28 November 1910, Virgil Lester Newingham born 31 December 1913, and Dorothy Lucille Newingham born 5 October 1915.
Peter Dixon Newingham died at his farm home, south of Lafontain, Kansas 27 August 1924. He is buried in Bellview Cemetery.
Laura Elizabeth Binau/Newingham never remarried. After the death of Pete she went to Iowa with Virgil and Dorothy and stayed a school year, returning to the farm in Kansas for several years. The farm horses and equipment were sold at auction Aug. 27, 1929 and the land was leased out for several years. Laura spent time going to her children's homes and visiting, some times working while there. She eventually moved to Eugene, Oregon where all her children also moved. The farm was then sold.

She was a member of the Eugene Church of Christ. Mother of Homer G., Maybelle V. Fields and Virgil L. all of Eugen, Charlie of Veneta, and Dorothy L. Roseburry of Junction City; sister of George Binau and Hannah Binau, both of Des Moines, Iowa; 11 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren Her body was interred 16 June 1970, Fredonia Kansas, Bellevue Cemetery.
