Funeral services for Lewis R. "Lew" George were conducted Sept. 1 at United Methodist Church in Lander with the Rev. Steve Hermes officiating. Graveside servied followed at Douglas Park Cemetery.

Mr. George died Aug. 26, 2006 at his home in Lander after a lengthy illness.

Mr. George was born in LaBonte; the son of Harry and Mabel George. He was raised on the family ranch south of Douglas. He attended school in Douglas, graduating from High School in 1939.

He served in the Wyoming National Guard from 1939-1942, then in the U.S. Army during World War II. Mr. George was stationed in Australia, New Guinea and the Phillipine Islands. He remained an active duty member of the Wyoming National Guard until 1957.

He married Betty Jean Esmay in Douglas on May 12, 1946. Mr. George worked for U. S. Steel for a number of years, then managed the Zannetti Bus Terminal in Lander. He was also the owner-operator of Lyle's Saw Shop. Mr. George was a member of the IOOF Lodge and the Lander Lion's Club. During his 85 years, he volunteered for numerous organizations, including the Lander Volunteer Fire Department, was a volunteer ambulance driver and taught knot tying and horse care classes for area 4-H clubs. He was also active in the Lander rodeo and parade committees.

Survivors include daughters Rhoda George of Lander, Cheryl Fields and her husband Terry of Billings, Mont.; Betty Cherrey and her husband Pat of Fairview, Mont.; son Greg George and his wife Pam of Torrington; 11 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his sister, Harriet; his parents; his brothers, James and Richard; and his wife of 57 years, Betty.
