LAFAYETTE - A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated today, Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette for Mrs. Lucy "Burl" Hebert Fitzgerald, 89, who passed away Thursday, December 8, 2011 at her home in Lafayette.

Interment will follow in Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Scott.

Rev. Father Gilbert J. Dutel, Pastor of St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church in Lafayette, will officiate.

Burl was born on Saturday, June 10, 1922 in Leonville and was a lifelong resident of Acadiana. She was a member of the St. Edmond Roman Catholic Church Altar Society and served faithfully for 25 years as a eucharistic minister at Lafayette General Medical Center.

Burl loved arts and crafts. She enjoyed crocheting and also owned and operated her own ceramic shop. Burl was a very kind-hearted, caring and giving person who adored her family and most enjoyed spending time with them. She will be remembered for her ministry work in helping those in need and is forever cherished as our dear mother, grandmother, minister and friend.

Burl is survived by four daughters, Beth Thibodeaux and her husband, Hayward, Bonnie Hawkins and her husband, Guy and Anne Marie Gautreaux and her husband, Carroll, all of Lafayette and Yvonne Venable and her husband, Gerald of Covington; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; and many dear nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 36 years, the late Clarence Fitzgerald; her only son, Gayron Keith Fitzgerald; a great-grandson, Andrew Herod; her parents, Jean Batiste Hebert and the former Clothilde Richard; thirteen siblings, brothers Oliver, Joseph, Zoder, J.B. and Eugene Hebert and Arthur Davis and sisters Emma and Elizabeth Hebert, Melanie and Clothilde Edmond, Celestine and Edolia Lanclos and Theresa Gorney; and one niece, Cheryl June Gorney.

Visiting hours at Fountain Memorial Funeral Home in Lafayette will be bserved Friday, December 9, 2011 from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and resume Saturday, December 10, 2011 at 8:00 a.m. until time of service.

A rosary will be recited Friday evening, December 9, 2011 at 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel.

Pallbearers will be Thad Gautreaux, Jason Bacon, Keith Bartlett, Gerald Venable, Guy Hawkins and Kris Cox.

Honorary Bearers are Hayward Thibodeaux, Bryan Arceneaux, Carroll Gautreaux, Herman Hebert, Wyvos Edmond, Verlon Lanclos, Donald Hebert and Barry Meche.

The family would like to thank Burl's dear friends Virginia "Tut" Broussard, Polly Hebert, Nola Chaisson and Hilda Hebert for their abiding friendships and steadfast presence in Burl's life.

Burl's family expresses special thanks to the staff at Heart of Hospice in Lafayette, especially our mother's caregivers Tara, Lisa, Brandon and LaKisha. The family also thanks Dr. Chen and his staff, especially Carly Roy as well as Dr. Ashkar and Dr. Debra Johnson.
