It has been well known, that our townsman, Mr. Jonathan Hoover, has been quite sick for several weeks past, and as word would come from this home of affliction, from time to time, grave fears of results constantly increased. Yet Mr. Hoover heroically bore up, and struggled against the advance of disease, and always appeared cheerful and resigned. But the fell destroyer, persisted in its purpose, and on the morning of Jan. 14th, at six o'clock, the patient, brave and noble man, surrendered. He fell asleep without a struggle, in the presence of his wife, brother, sister and all his children. His afflictions were long, severe, and almost unremitting, but were conquered by his spirit of resignation.
Jonathan Hoover was born in Dauphin County, Pa., Feb. 27th, 1833. He was therefore, 68 years, 10 months and 18 days old at the time of his death.
He came to this country from Pennsylvania, with his father's family, when he was about 14 years old. Some time in the year 1847, very early in life he learned the blacksmith's trade, and worked at it most successfully the greater part of his life. He was united in marriage to Miss Mary Blessing April 8, 1852 (1855), with whom he lived in noble christian marital relation till death did them part. There were born unto them ten children, two of whom preceded him across the river. The following survive him: Lizzie A., Nancy E., John H., Frank B., William H., Clyde O., Estel E., and Mable C., all of whom were present at the time of his death, and ever ready with loving ministration during his sickness. Mr. Hoover has four brothers, Mr. John H. Eby (half brother) of Cedar Rapids, Mr. Benj Hoover, of Lisbon, Mr. Christian Hoover and Mr. Michael Hoover, of Tama, and three sisters, Mrs. Floyd, of Lisbon, Mrs. Neidig, of Sugar Grove, and Mrs. Post, of Florida; he also has seven grand-children. All of these relatives and descendants, join with his faithful christian wife in inexpressible grief, over their loss in his death. Mr. Hoover was a faithful member of the United Brethren church, from some time about the year 1850, where he was always highly esteemed, and greatly loved, for his loyalty to christian principles, and devotion to the divine Redeemer's cause. To his pastor he often expressed his patient resignation, and firm hope, during his sickness. He was a member of the "Legion of Honor," where he was honored and appreciated. None can feel more sad, at this work of death, than his pastor who shall miss the inspiration of his presence in his front pew at all services when his health permitted. While we mourn his departure, we are assured he has gone to live with the angels, and glorified saints, in the presence of his Lord and Master.
He was a very industrious, strictly honest, devoted to his family, and his church, faithful to his friends and respected by all.
The funeral service will take place tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock, in the U. B. church, conducted by his pastor, Rev. I. K. Stratton.
