Peter Jacobsen was born in Shelby County, Iowa on September 28, 1870 to Andrew Jacobsen and his wife Dorothea Koch. On September 27, 1893 at age 22, Peter married Anna Katherine (Kate) Martes from neighboring Exira County. Their first child, Eva, was born later that year, Esther followed in 1895, and George in 1900.
Initially Peter built coffins, but Kate didn't like having dead people in the house, so he turned to cabinet making and general carpentry.
In 1902, Kate, Peter, and their family joined her parents and siblings in a mass move to Wadena, Minnesota where Kate's parents bought a farm. While living in Wadena, Kate gave birth to sons Earl and Gordon in 1905 and 1907, respectively.
In 1905, Kate and Peter bought property in Wadena for $1,200, located at what is now the southwest corner of the intersection of Jefferson St. N. and Birch Ave. NW. They purchased the property from Kate's sister and brother-in-law, Louise and Anton Arbes.
In 1907-1908, Peter's construction company, Young & Jacobsen, built a school in Sebeka, Minnesota, about 14 miles north of Wadena. The lintel from that school was preserved when the school was replaced.
At the time of the 1910 US Census in May, Kate, Peter, and their family were still living in Wadena, but later that year they moved to Beach, ND, where Peter built a school.
In the spring of 1911, Peter filed for a Homestead near Plevna, Montana, and the family moved there in September 1911. Kate's sister and brother-in-law, Lizzie and Joe Lasar, homesteaded the north half of the same section. At the time the family arrived at the homestead, Eva was 17, Esther was 16, George was 11, Earl was 6, and Gordon was 4.
It's probable that Peter also built a school and perhaps other buildings in Plevna.
Kate and Peter's sixth and final child, Lorna, was born in Montana in 1914.
On 06 December 1915, Peter died suddenly, possibly from a burst appendix. His brother Andrew travelled up from Iowa (their father had died earlier in the year) and took Peter's body back for burial in what is now known as the Olsen Cemetery, near Shelby Iowa, where Peter's parents were buried.

Rev. J. C. Petersen was called to Shelby Wednesday of last week, where at two o'clock, he conducted the funeral services of Peter Jacobsen, formerly a Fairview town-ship citizen, of late a resident of Montana.
From the Plevna (Mont.) Herald and Shelby News we get the following information:
"Mr. Jacobsen had been slightly indisposed for a few days as a result of an accident, but was not thot [sic] to be seriously injured when the end came suddenly on a Monday, probably thru [sic] heart failure.
"Peter Jacobsen was born in Shelby county, Iowa, Sept. 28th, 1870, where his boyhood was spent. On September 27th, 1893, he was married to Miss Katherine Martes, in Exira, Iowa. This union was blessed with six children, who with the mother, survive to mourn the death of their father and supporter. Mr. Jacobsen had come west with his family four years ago, when he took up the homestead north of here. He leaves a widow and six children, Mrs. E. River being the oldest, the others all being minors.
"The remains were brought to Shelby Wednesday morning and services took place in the Adventist church. The burial took place in the Fairview township cemetery [now the Olsen Cemetery], beside his father and mother. He also leaves to mourn his departure, one brother, Andrew C., of Shelby, four sisters, Mrs. Wm. Olson, Hamlin; Mrs. Ida Jensen and Mrs. Leroy Nigh, Oshkosh, Neb.; and Mrs. Bertha Larson of Sholes, Neb., all of whom were present at the funeral service."
