Born here, he was graduated from Arms Academy in 1937, attended Ithaca, N.Y., College, and received a teaching certificate from the former Fitchburg Teachers College.
He was a member of Mary Lyon Church, the Massachusetts Association of Retired Teachers, and the Orange Masonic Lodge. He was also active in the wood-carving group at the Senior Center in Shelburne Falls.
He leaves his wife of 50 years, the former Faith Gilmore; a son, Gordon F. Jr. of Williamsburg; a daughter, Mary-Faith Allen of Turners Falls, Montague; a sister, Madeline Davis of Shelburne Falls, and five grandchildren.
